Local Press is Always Cool

Sometime it pays to have small town connections, especially when the local newpsaper devotes almost an entire page to highlight your company. In November 2005, the Farmville Herald did just that with an awesome article entitled "It's All Geek to Them" from Jason Norton, a true geek in his own right. Some of the more memorable quotes include:

“We’ve said many times that the secret behind a successful business is that you’ve really got to love what you’re doing. That’s the first thing. You can’t just pick something out of thin air and do it. So we didn’t start with a business plan, we just started as geeks. We wanted stuff. We’re comic readers; we’re role players. We’re a part of that scene and we wanted the gear. Nobody was making the stuff I wanted to wear,”

“Geek chic is in right now, though. It’s huge. It has been for a couple of years because we’re coming into our own, be-cause we fellow geeks are realiz-ing, ‘Hey, we make money. Chicks dig us anyway because we’re smart and funny. We don’t need to throw touchdown passes, chicks dig us.’ And we’re not alone, because there’s a market for this stuff now,” (For the record, Jon denies ever having said "chicks dig us." That, of course, has never been more than wishful thinking.)

When coupled with the wide range of styles, colors and sizes the company offers, over 500,000 different shirt combina-tions are possible.
That variety has given Geek-label an edge on its competition which often only offers a “one-size/one-style fits all” product line. The diversity, Lynn says, has held special appeal for one often overlooked demographic: female geeks.

“Women really love the idea that they don’t have to have just an adult-sized black t-shirt,” Lynn said, referencing the almost-standard garb for comic and role-playing enthusiasts.

“We’re in the business of creating fans and not customers. By and large we’re doing that, and I think the ways that we do that are not only with the cool stuff that we have. We have a lifetime guarantee on a t-shirt. Who puts a lifetime guarantee on a t-shirt? But I figure if somebody wears it until it falls apart, yeah, I’ll give them a new one,” Lynn said.
